Wait… what is a Death Doula?!

A Death Doula is someone who is able to help bridge the gaps between physical, emotional, spiritual and medical supports to dying people and their families. Death Doulas are able to offer support, referrals, time, care and education in all areas of death, dying and grief. We are in service of people who are dying - which is everyone! - and their families and loved ones, paying close attention to values, beliefs, and wishes.

A Death Doula sits in service before, during, and even after death, and is a grounded and neutral person who is able to help carry the weight that comes with death and dying. Services and supports can be as simple as sittings with the dying person or their family as company or in conversation, to sitting with the person and the family as the person is dying. We serve as an extra set of hands, a centered heart, and a provider of a variety of resources. *Death Doulas do not perform legal or medical aid / support / guidance! See below for more details.*

End of Life Doula Services

Last spring, I became certified as an End of Life Doula / Death Doula through Douglas College and am currently enrolled in DeathwivesDeathschool. I volunteer with our local hospice and as a grief companion, and host a monthly Death Café.

I believe in having these often challenging conversations in order to live our lives as thoroughly and intentionally as possible. End of Life and Advance Care Planning conversations are critical to have - and have often, sharing our visions and wishes, while listening to those of the people we care about the most.

I would be honoured to have these conversations with you and to facilitate them within your family units.

End of Life Doula Services include but are not limited to:

✧ Helping facilitate the tough conversations (online and in person) between family members, couples and friends with regards to end of life care, decisions, values and beliefs.

✧ Facilitating conversations (online and in person) that help clarify values and wishes about end of life, end of life care, etc. as well as conversations for reflection and life reviews.

✧ Helping clients and patients establish and create legacy projects.

✧ Advance Care Planning and Patient Advocacy with wishes and decisions for end of life.

✧ Supporting clients and their family and closest friends on an emotional and spiritual level before, during, and after death, as well and practically throughout the process.

✧ Provide referrals for various supports in your community, such as therapists, healers, advisors, support workers, etc.

✧ Sitting bedside through transition / to vigil.

✧ After Death; revisiting or revising funeral plans, planning for removal of medical equipment and supplies, processing visits, grief education and referrals.

As an End of Life Doula, I do not perform medical tasks.

As an End of Life Doula, I do not make financial or medical decisions for my clients.

As an End of Life Doula, I do not and will not project my beliefs on my clients or their family members.
